If you want to know the destiny of a business, or an institution, or a society, you only need to look at one thing… The values held by the leaders of those organizations.
Freedom, liberty, honor, and the rule of law… These were the kinds of values that America was founded upon 300 hundred years ago.
And yet in the past 20 years, I’ve watched those values disappear with my very own eyes. When I think of America today, and look at the leadership found in Washington, words like deception, corruption, greed, treason, and secrecy come to mind.
Today our leaders do not do the right things for the right reasons, they do what’s right for them, and when those are the types of values demonstrated by a societies leaders, that society is doomed.
And so we have a choice… We can sellout and follow their lead and drive America into a leaderless, valueless, nation of corruption where it’s every man and woman for themselves, or we can turn back toward the principles that directed this country to greatness.
This podcast is my humble little effort to be a part of the solution with more than just lip service.
And when I started it almost two years ago, one of the individuals at the top of my wish list was a gentleman named, Mike Rowe.
13 Years ago, Mike decided to start a show called Dirty Jobs in order to shine a spotlight on the true heroes of this country… The everyday working men and women who have built America, one job, and one small business at a time.
Men who measure their success not by the amount of money they make, but by the amount of pride they take in the quality of their work.
On Labor Day of 2008, he Launched the MikeRoweWorks Foundation which provides financial assistance to individuals with a desire to learn a skill that is in demand. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in education for trade schools across the country.
And as of February, he launched a podcast called, The Way I Heard It, which has already received over 30 million downloads…
Well today Mike was gracious enough to join us on Self Made Man, and in addition to discussing the current challenges faced by the United States and the solutions, we also dive into the challenges that come with being in the public eye, and how to respond to negativity, which he has turned into an art.
This is an incredible interview with valuable lessons for every leader and entrepreneur who wants to make a difference…
